I installed the i7 and the fan of the cpu goes to the maximum, I reinstalled the i3 I put the thermal paste and the fan of the cpu still goes to the max, mac fan tells me 0rpm!! I Dissembled iMac for clean then i accidently shorted processor pin out. Unfortunately it failed and I am trying to work out why. When I looked at the i7 It only really had good amount of paste left on the sides but it was enough for it to work perfectly for 2 years.

It will not intel core i3 update just slow down a bit to maintain the temperature as the cooling system can almost make it. I bought an cote off ebay – used, but from a reliable seller so assuming CPU isn’t at fault.
